Sight (General Help)
While the text descriptions here may refer to your perception with all
senses, sight is by far the most important. If all is well, your character
should be able to see normally. However, it may happen that your character
is blinded for some reason:
- The room is too dark - Some rooms, particularly underground, may
be difficult to see in because of, well, lack of light!
- The room is too bright - The races of Arda have very high tolerance
for very bright lights, however it is technically possible for there
being just too much of it.
- Quest - Some quests or items may force you to be blind, because of, for
example, sand or other substance thrown at your eyes.
Note: |
Different races have different seeing abilities; Dwarves and Hobbits
will not be as easily blinded as Edain.
|
While blind, your character suffers the following penalties:
- You may not view detailed item descriptions. You may only see the
long description of the room you are in.
- You will be blocked from performing many quest actions.
- You will be severely handicapped in combat. Only warrior's
"battle instincts" skill may negate this to an extent.
Since the most common reason for blindness is simple lack of light,
it is in your best interest to be prepared for that situation: always
carry a light source at hand! A torch or a brand pulled from fire should
be easy to obtain, however more experienced players prefer more handy
items - magic light crystals. Wizards and necromancers may also take
advantage of their light-emitting spells, and rangers and sniffers from
their "eaglesight" and "attune" abilities.
You should also realize that since blindness handicaps living beings
so much, it may be a very efficient weapon. Experienced wizards are known
to use their dark spell very often, and other professions like to make use
of magic items that absorb light.
