Hints (General Help)The Two Towers has a hint system that presents new players with
various useful information regarding playing the game. Currently, we
have four categories of hints:
- Miscellaneous game hints - They contain various generic information
about the game. These hints cycle through a pre-set list; a hint
will be shown every 5 minutes.
- General hints - Hints that pertain to your character's status. These
hints will point to things you should be doing that are not relevant
to the particular area you are in. For example, a general hint may
tell you that you are too encumbered or that your hp is too low and
you should go find a healer.
- Local hints - Hints that refer to the room you are in, or the subarea
(town) you are in. They will typically describe a service room such
as a shop, or tell you where a signpost in a town is.
- Quest hints - The quest hints serve two purposes: First, they can
direct you to where a quest starts in a town (or point you to a
town or area with quests when you are in the wilderness). Second,
when you are already doing a quest, a quest hint will remind you
of the goal of the quest and point you towards the next step you
should do to complete it.
Note, however, that not all quests are covered by the hint system;
hints are meant to help you in starting the game, not provide a
complete walkthrough! Therefore, you can expect full quest hints
on most quests in the starting towns, as well as on certain popular
quests outside towns scattered in the wilderness. If you need help
with other quests, you may ask a newbie helper, although bear in
mind the rules in "help questinfo".
There are two ways in which hints are displayed to players:
- Automatic - Hints will be shown to players at certain time intervals
or after certain events. This applies to the miscellaneous hints,
some general hints such as getting low on HP and some local hints such
as entering a service room with a hint associated. Automatic hints
can be turned off at any time with the "hint off" command (and turned
back on later with "hint on" if one wishes so).
- Manual - You can ask the game for a hint at any time by just typing
"hint". This will attempt to choose the "most important" hint at
the moment and display it to you. You can cycle through all the other
available hints by simply repeating the "hint" command. You can also
filter the hints by their type, by typing "hint general", "hint local"
and "hint quest". Note that this does cover the miscellaneous hints;
for them, use the "hint random" command.
