Password (Technical Help)
The password you choose for your character is like your own personal
"key" to T2T. With it, you can unlock the "door" between the real world
and our little textual fantasy world here. But there is a problem. It's
your key and you have to take care of it!
Someone could steal your key if it's not well-made. You could lose
your key if you don't keep track of it. Or, through no fault of your
own... your key could just get destroyed... a hard-drive isn't always
the most reliable thing in the world.
Here's some rules and tips about passwords that you NEED to know:
Memorize Memorize MEMORIZE!
I can't stress that enough. Don't make your password and then
not try to memorize it, you'll forget it no matter how great you
think your memory is. Choose a password that will be easy for you
to memorize, and say it to yourself over and over until you are
SURE that you'll never forget what it was.
Make it hard to "guess".
While trying to keep it easy for you to memorize, you'll also have
to remember to keep it difficult to guess. I suggest your password
be something special to only you, and if that is too easy, take two
things that are special to you and put them together in word combo.
You'd be surprised at how many people have the same password as their
Name. And you'd be surprised how many times they ask for my help when
they get taken-over by someone else.
Do NOT use your MUD client's auto login feature.
It's a handy feature, but when your zmud crashes you've just lost
your password. And too many people depend on their clients to keep
their passwords for them. If you disable that feature, that means you
have to manually log in every time...meaning you have it memorized!
Watch your login screen.
And finally, if you ever get a "login failure" error when you log in
and you're sure it wasn't you: contact the Power of Law through the
"law" command informing what happened. A login failure means that
someone tried to log in as your character 3 times and failed. That's
a good sign that someone's out there trying to steal your character.
If you notify the Power of Law, we have a good chance of catching the
person who is doing this and punishing them.
In review:
- Memorize
- Make it hard to guess
- Don't use auto-login feature
If you lose your password, there is only one way to recover it: using
the automatic password recovery system at our web page address:
http://www.t2tmud.org/password.php
While the password cannot be retrieved it can be reset by the system.
Upon request, the recovery system will send a password reset code to the
e-mail address you provided through the MUD's "chfn" command.
The reset code is valid for one hour and if used, will substitute your
old password. Your old password continues to be valid until you use the
new reset code. If the reset code is not used in one hour after being
created or if you login using your old password, it will automatically
expire (this is done as a mean to prevent abuse).
Note that you MUST provide a valid e-mail address through the MUD's
"chfn" command if you wish to use this system. It's preferable to choose
an e-mail that only trusted people from the MUD know about, and that no
other people (including roommates, spouse, etc.) have access to.
Each player is responsible for their own password and e-mail address.
It is yours to take care of, and it's probably the most important thing
about your character (in an un-thematic sense). Ainur will NEVER recover
any lost passwords manually.
Your e-mail address information can only be read by MUD administrators.
To change your password at any time, use the 'passwd' command.
To change your e-mail address, use the 'chfn' command.
