The clamour of hooves thundering on the field of battle is said to be one of the most frightening sounds in war. It takes extraordinary morale, discipline, and determination to hold the lines when you are facing the prospect of a ruthless charge. This is what riders do. They serve as symbols of strength and power, inspiring their allies with mighty warcries. Astride their trusted mounts, riders also have a considerable advantage in combat over those who fight at ground level. The training they undergo to keep their balance allows them to fight better even on foot, but they are at their peak effectiveness when mounted.
